UN General Assembly Renews Volker Türk’s Mandate as High Commissioner for Human Rights for Four More Years

UN General Assembly Renews Volker Türk’s Mandate as High Commissioner for Human Rights for Four More Years

Prepared by: Human Rights TV Editorial Team

New York – Human Rights TV

The United Nations General Assembly has voted to renew the mandate of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk for an additional four-year term, reflecting continued support from a majority of Member States for the Office’s role in promoting and protecting human rights worldwide.

The resolution was adopted with 144 votes in favor, 10 against, and 13 abstentions, following debates in which several countries expressed differing views regarding the High Commissioner’s work and positions on a number of international human rights issues.

Volker Türk becomes one of the few High Commissioners to serve two full terms since the Office was established in 1993, at a time when the international human rights system faces growing challenges stemming from armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and increasing restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms in various regions.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stated that it will continue monitoring human rights situations, documenting violations, supporting United Nations human rights mechanisms, and providing technical assistance to Member States in accordance with international human rights law.

Human Rights Perspective

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights plays a central role in promoting and protecting human rights globally through monitoring, reporting, dialogue with governments, and supporting international accountability mechanisms. The independence of the Office remains a key element in maintaining the credibility of the UN human rights system.
